Who will be PSG’s top goal scorer now Messi has arrived?

Paris St Germain signed Argentinean superstar Lione Messi on a free transfer during the transfer window this summer. The 33-year-old attacker will bolster the club’s attacking options ahead of the new season.

The arrival of the former Barcelona forward also adds another goal threat to PSG’s already star-studded attack. He will link up with new teammates Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Angel Di Maria, making a mouth-watering attack which will surely make them the favorites in French Ligue 1 Betting.

The Ligue 1 club are looking to compete on all fronts this season. After a disappointing 2020/21 campaign, PSG are the leading Ligue 1 betting favourites to reclaim the title.

PSG were eliminated from the Champions League in the semi-final stages and missed out on the Ligue 1 title to Lille. There only major title was the Coupe de France.

But, with the arrival of Messi at PSG, leading players at the club this season should have no problem finding the net regularly. But who will take the mantle as lead talisman under Mauricio Pochettino and

Lionel Messi

Messi has maintained a world-class goalscoring record since breaking into the Barcelona first team in the 2004/05 season. The 34-year-old scored 30 or more goals in 12 of his 16 seasons in all competitions at the Nou Camp, including 30 goals in 35 La Liga appearances in the 2020/21 season.

His consistency to perform on the European stage will also help PSG in their quest to win their first-ever Champions League title. Messi has an esteemed history in Europe’s elite competition. He has scored 120 goals in the Champions League to date, the second-highest goal-scoring record Champions League history.

Despite only making one substitute appearance so far this season, Messi is likely to become a regular first-team player and certainly carries a genuine goal threat. However, whether he will become PSG’s leading talisman this season depends on how quickly Messi can adapt to the style of play at the club and to Ligue 1 football.

Mbappé, Messi and Neymar – PSG forwards

Kylian Mbappe

Since joining PSG from Monaco in 2017, Mbappe has developed into one of the leading forwards in world football. The 22-year-old has scored 135 goals in 175 appearances for the Paris club and has gone from strength to strength each season.

After 13 Ligue 1 goals in his first season, Mbappe netted 33 goals in 29 league appearances in his second season at PSG, and he also scored 27 goals last season. Mbappe has also scored more goals in the Champions League each season, and he had his best-ever goals return in the 2020/21 campaign, firing in eight goals in 10 matches.

Mbappe has been PSG’s main goal threat for the past three seasons, and Messi’s arrival will only boost the performance levels of the young French starlet. If he and Messi click early on then they could both score 20-30 goals at Le Parc des Princes this season.

Neymar

Neymar has had a topsy turvy career since joining PSG from Barcelona in 2017. The Brazilian forward has clear talent, scoring 87 goals and making 52 assists in 117 appearances for the Parisian side.

However, Neymar’s PSG career has been curtailed by recurring injuries. In his four seasons so far in Paris, his goal-scoring record has declined, along with his number of appearances each season. Neymar scored 19 goals in 20 appearances during the 2017/18 campaign, his first in a PSG shirt. In the following seasons, Neymar scored 15 and 13 goals between 2018 and 2020 but only netted nine league goals in 18 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

Despite being in and out of the PSG squad, due to ongoing injury problems, Neymar has proven his ability to find the net when fit. A successful season will depend on whether or not the 29-year old Brazilian can remain injury-free this season and profit from the arrival of Leo Messi at the club. If he can then Neymar could return to the heights of his career at Barcelona, where he scored more than 20 goals in each of his four seasons at the Nou Camp.

Angel Di Maria

Angel Di Maria has been a consistent performer for PSG over the past five seasons. The experienced attacker has been ever-present at Le Parc des Princes since joining from Man United in the 2015/16 season, and he is edging towards 300 appearances for the club.

But, Di Maria has been more of a provider rather than a scorer of goals in Paris, making 111 assists and scoring 89 goals over the past five seasons. The Argentinian has only reached double figures twice during his PSG career and top-scored in Ligue 1 with 12 goals during the 2018/19 season.

Although Di Maria is unlikely to be PSG’s top-scorer this season, he could provide additional competition upfront for the club. The reliable 33-year-old is more likely to support an attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe this season and to fill in throughout the season, which may lessen his goal-scoring impact.
